Watercress (Nasturtium officinale)

  Watercress is a good source of iron and other minerals. It makes a great summer salad as well as enhancing your health

The herb contains mustard glycosides and mustard oil which can cause stomach irritations in a few rare individuals.  It should not be used medicinally for children younger than 4 years old.

Watercress has a fresh peppery taste and is used extensively in cooking in many parts of the world.  Due to the blood purifying actions of watercress it makes an excellent addition in a heart healthy diet.  The leaves are very rich in vitamin C and is often used to cure or ward off scurvy.



Common Names:
  • Scurvy grass
  • Tall nasturtium

Plant Parts used:
Leaves, roots and young shoots

Side Effects or contraindications:
  • Do not use if you have gastrointestinal ulcers and inflammatory disorders of the kidneys
  • In rare cases, gastrointestinal upsets.
  • Not for children less than 4 years of age

Cautions:
  • Excessive or prolonged use can cause kidney problems.
  • Do not take juice undiluted as it will cause mouth and stomach inflammation

  • Scalp treatment for hairloss caused by fungus infections.


Usual Method of Prep Usual Dosage
Best used in salads Eat with your choice of dressings
Tea:
Use 1 tsp soots in
1/2 cup in boiling water
Do not steep more than 5 minutes
Long steeping causes a loss of vitamin and mineral content
Take:
1/2 cup freshly made 3 times a day.
Juice:
watercress in electric juicer
Take:
1 tsp 3 times a day in milk or water.
Mix with water to rub onto scalp for hairloss.
