Goldenseal (Hydrastas canadensis)

  Goldenseal is a remedy that has been around for ages and can be used internally and externally.  Helping alcoholic liver damage is just one of those uses.

It is used for all catarrhal conditions as it acts on the mucous membranes.  A good douche can be made with the infusion.

Dip a toothbrush into the tea and apply to the gums for soreness and gum disease.  The tea also makes an excellent mouthwash.

Rootstock

Side Effects or contraindications:
  • Do not take this if you are pregnant.

  • Should not be used by children under two.

  • Children and older adults should take smaller doses.


Do Not take internally if:
  • If you have Heart disease, epilepsy, or being treated for coagulation problems.

  • If you have high blood pressure (The properties of hydrastine may cause blood pressure to rise.)

Cautions:
Eating The fresh plant produces ulcerations and inflammations of mucous membranes.

  • Antiperodic   (An agent which acts on intermittent diseases, such as Malaria.)
  • Antiseptic
  • Catarrhal Conditions
  • Diuretic
  • Laxative
  • Liver Damage (alcoholic)
  • Tonic


External use Goldenseal
  • Skin Diseases
  • Ringworm
  • Pyorrhea
Usual Method of Prep Usual Dosage
Infusion:
Add 1tsp powdered rootstock to
1 pint boiling water
stir, let cool
strain off the liquid
Take:
1 to 3 tsp 3 to 6 times a day.
Eyewash:
Add 1 tsp rootstock and
1 tsp Boric acid to
1 pint boiling water
stir, let cool
Strain off the liquid
Wash eyes twice a day for relief
