Burdock, Greater (Arctium lappa)

   burdock is one of the most effective herbs for cleansing the blood without bringing on bouts of nausea.  It contains 20-50% inulin (helps the plant hold energy) and lots of iron.

It is used for arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica and a host of other conditions related to bone diseases.  Burdock can help reduce joint swelling and harmful calcium deposits. Burdock also helps reduce swelling due to water retention.

Both Tea and tincture are used for stomach problems, Fresh leaves only are used in decoction for liver ailments and also as a wash for Acne and Eczema.. 

Bruised fresh leaves are good to cure poison ivy and poison oak rashes  Simply apply the leaves to the rash areas.

The oil obtained from the seeds should only be used under medical supervision.

None known other than a mild constipation in some rare individuals.

    Internal uses for Burdock:

  • Aperient (mild laxative)
  • Cholagogue (Increases flow of bile into intestines)

  • Bone and Joint problems

    or application of leaves.

Usual Method of Prep Usual Dosage
Decoction:
1 cup cold water, add
I tsp root (fresh or dried)
Let stand for 5 hours
then bring to a boil, boiling for 1 minute. .
Drink 1 cup per day.
A little honey to sweeten will improve the taste..
Tincture:
Best to purchase this
Take 10 to 20 drops per dayIt may be taken in regular tea.
Juice:
Grate the fresh root and add a like amount of water (half and half)
Squeeze the liquid out. and save.
Root may be discarded.
Drink 1 cup daily in mouthful
doses throughout the day.
