Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus)

(Not to be confused with Red Bilberry which is Alpine cranberry).  Bilberry is an excellent herb for the eyesight and acts beneficially throughout the body, benefiting the circulation and varicose veins..

The active anthocyanoside (anthocyanidin) flavonoids in bilberry have proven eye tonic properties,. Scientific investigation shows potential benefits in preventing or treating poor vision (especially due to age-related degeneration), cataracts, retinopathy and glaucoma.

Studies have shown bilberry medicinal properties improves circulation to the eyes and enhances oxygen levels in the eyes.   Anthocyanosides stabilize collagen and act as potent antioxidants. Myrtillin, an anthocyanoside in bilberries, possesses an anti-hyperglycaemic effect, often after one dose.
