Barberry (Berberis vulgaris)

  Barberry encourages bile secretion and is very useful in all manner of liver complaints.   It is also an effective laxative.

Add an infusion of the berries to purge the bowels or use the tea as a mouthwash and gargle for sore throats and other mouth irritations.   Barberry also helps in building up your body by helping the liver to help in the condition of Anemia.

    Root:
  • Hepatic   (Acts on the Liver)
  • Laxative

  • Fruit:
  • Laxative
  • Refrigerant (lowers abnormal body temp)


External use for Barberry

  • None


Use the roots only in Spring and Fall. Use Berries when completely ripe.

Usual Method of Prep Usual Dosage
Decoction:
1/2 to 1 tsp root boil to
1 cup water boil one minute
Steep for 5 minutes
Take:
1/2 to 1 cup by mouthful doses spread throughout the day.
Tincture:
Best purchased
take:
3 to 7 drops 3 or 4 times a day.
Berries:
dead ripe only
may be eaten raw or juiced.
do not exceed 1/2 cup juice a day. Highly laxative.
